BJP's Impressive Victory in Haryana Assembly Elections 2024
This is a huge increase for the party, which had only six MLAs in 2000.
The BJP's current seat count is one higher than the 2014 elections, where it contested all 90 assembly seats for the first time.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Haryana had a big win in the 2024 state assembly elections, securing 48 seats and achieving a hat-trick despite some people being unhappy with the current government and predictions from exit polls.
This is a huge increase for the party, which had only six MLAs in 2000.
The BJP successfully stopped the Congress party from taking back power by focusing on important issues during the campaign.
These included problems faced by farmers, the Agniveer military recruitment scheme, and protests by wrestlers against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment allegations.
In the previous elections in 2019, the BJP secured 40 seats and formed a government with support from the Dushyant Chautala-led Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) and independent MLAs.
Unlike this time, the party had Manohar Lal Khattar as its chief ministerial candidate.
The BJP's current seat count is one higher than the 2014 elections, where it contested all 90 assembly seats for the first time.
Before that, it had lost its alliance with the Haryana Janhit Congress, led by Kuldeep Bishnoi.
To enhance its chances in the elections, the BJP organised four Vijay Sankalp Yatras covering all 90 assembly segments.
The BJP did well in the elections because of its strong performance in the general elections and the popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The party won seven out of eight Lok Sabha seats.
In the past, the BJP had a hard time in Haryana and was often overshadowed by local parties like the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the Haryana Vikas Party, which has now joined the Haryana Congress.
Before 2014, the BJP's best result was winning 16 out of 20 seats in 1987.
In 1991, it struggled and only won two seats. But in 1996, it improved and won 11 seats.Haryana became a separate state from Punjab in 1966.
